Sustainability

Better for Your Home, Better for the Planet

We are honest about where we are on our sustainability journey. We are not perfect, but we are making genuine, practical changes that reduce our environmental impact without compromising on quality.

Our Approach to Sustainability

Painting and decorating is not the most environmentally intensive industry, but it is not without impact. Solvent-based paints release volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere. Paint tins end up in landfill. Vehicles burn fuel travelling between jobs. We believe it is our responsibility to address these impacts where we can — honestly and without exaggeration.

We are not claiming to be carbon neutral or to have solved the environmental challenges of the decorating trade. What we are doing is making practical, meaningful changes across our operations that add up to a genuine reduction in our footprint. Here is what that looks like in practice.

Low-VOC and Natural Paints

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals found in conventional paints that evaporate during and after application, contributing to air pollution and poor indoor air quality. The familiar “new paint smell” is actually the off-gassing of these compounds, and exposure can cause headaches, respiratory irritation, and longer-term health effects.

We actively recommend low-VOC and zero-VOC alternatives wherever possible. The premium paint brands we work with — including Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, and Paint & Paper Library — have made significant strides in reducing VOC content across their water-based ranges without sacrificing performance or colour depth.

For clients who want to go further, we offer fully natural paint options from brands like Edward Bulmer and Earthborn. These paints are made from natural ingredients — earth pigments, plant oils, and mineral binders — with no petrochemical derivatives whatsoever. They are particularly popular for nurseries, children's bedrooms, and homes where air quality is a priority.

Natural Paint Brands We Recommend

Edward Bulmer Natural Paint

The UK's only fully certified natural paint brand. Made entirely from earth and mineral pigments, plant-based oils, and natural resins. Zero VOCs, zero petrochemicals, and fully biodegradable. The colours are historically informed and beautifully nuanced — proof that natural does not mean limited.

Earthborn Paints

A British brand committed to making paint that is better for people and the environment. Earthborn's Claypaint is virtually VOC-free, highly breathable, and covers exceptionally well. It is particularly suited to older properties where breathable wall finishes are important for managing moisture and preventing damp.

Waste Reduction and Recycling

Paint waste is one of the biggest environmental challenges in our industry. In the UK, an estimated 50 million litres of paint go to waste each year. We are committed to minimising our contribution to that figure through careful ordering, proper storage, and responsible disposal.

We calculate paint quantities carefully using detailed measurements, which reduces over-ordering. Leftover paint in good condition is donated to community repaint schemes, which redistribute surplus paint to people and organisations who need it. Empty paint tins are cleaned and recycled through approved metal recycling streams.

Our dust sheets, masking materials, and protective coverings are cleaned and reused across multiple projects rather than being treated as single-use items. We use professional-grade cotton dust sheets that last for years, reducing the need for disposable plastic alternatives.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

Transport is the largest source of carbon emissions in our operations. We are taking practical steps to reduce this impact without compromising our ability to serve clients across London.

For local site visits, surveys, and colour consultations, our team frequently cycles or uses public transport rather than driving. London's extensive transport network makes this practical for many of the central postcodes we serve. When vehicles are necessary — for transporting equipment and materials — we plan routes efficiently and consolidate trips wherever possible.

We schedule projects geographically where we can, grouping jobs in the same area to reduce travel between sites. Our digital project management system eliminates most paper-based communications, and we use email and digital photography for progress reporting rather than printed documents.

An Ongoing Journey

Sustainability is not a destination — it is an ongoing process of improvement. We regularly review our practices and look for new ways to reduce our impact. If you have specific environmental requirements for your project, we are always happy to discuss how we can accommodate them.
