Case Study
Conservation Row White Stucco Terrace Exterior Repaint
A mid-Victorian white stucco terrace house in South Kensington, forming part of a unified conservation row on Onslow Gardens, required a full exterior repaint to match the approved colour standard shared by twelve neighbouring properties. The project encompassed the full stucco facade, window surrounds, all original sash windows, the front door, and the basement area railings, all to be completed in Sandtex Smooth Masonry in Antique White. Scaffold access on this narrow residential street, with a central garden square restricting kerbside positioning, required bespoke logistics.
The Challenge
Achieving a colour match with the neighbouring properties — whose last repaint had been completed five years earlier and had since weathered slightly — required careful testing and adjustment of the masonry paint shade before full application. The conservation area consent conditions required the colour to match the established terrace standard, meaning a slight warm tint was needed rather than the standard Antique White off the shelf. Complex scaffold access on Onslow Gardens, where pavement widths are restricted and kerbside loading bays are heavily contested, required a highways licence and early-morning delivery coordination with the local authority. Several of the sash windows had developed paint failures at the sill junctions, where capillary action had drawn moisture under the paint film and caused localised rot.
Our Approach
We obtained a highways scaffold licence and coordinated with the Royal Borough's highways team for early-morning deliveries to avoid peak pedestrian and traffic times. Colour matching was achieved by preparing five sample panels in progressively warmer tints of Sandtex Antique White, which were assessed by the conservation officer and the neighbouring property's managing agent until a consensus colour was agreed. The full facade was washed, and all areas of defective paint were stripped back and prepared. Cracked render was routed, filled with Toupret Exterior Flexible Filler, and feathered smooth before a full coat of stabilising primer was applied. Sash windows with rot were treated using Repair Care Dry Flex consolidant and filler to restore the sill profiles without timber replacement, then primed and finished with three coats of Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior Gloss. Front door and railings were finished in traditional gloss black.
Before & After

Stucco terrace facade restored to match the conservation row standard
The Result
The completed facade blends seamlessly into the Onslow Gardens terrace, with the agreed Antique White tint matching the weathered tone of the neighbouring properties to within a perceptible margin. The conservation officer confirmed the colour compliance at inspection and noted the quality of the render preparation. Two neighbouring residents enquired about pricing for their own properties during the course of the works, and the client subsequently received a commendation letter from the Onslow Gardens Residents' Association.
Products Used
“The colour matching process was more involved than we expected, but the team handled all the coordination with the conservation officer and our neighbours patiently and professionally. The finished result is exactly right — our house looks part of the terrace again.”
