Case Study

Chalcot Square Pastel Facade Restoration

One of the iconic pastel-painted townhouses on Chalcot Square in Primrose Hill required a full exterior restoration to renew its distinctive coloured facade. The property's soft pink render had faded and weathered significantly, and the precise heritage colour needed to be matched and approved by Camden Council's conservation team before work could commence. The project included the full stucco facade, all sash windows, the front door, and the basement area railings, restoring the property to its celebrated appearance.

The Challenge

Colour-matching the original pastel shade proved demanding, as the existing paint had faded unevenly and no manufacturer's colour reference existed for the original specification. Camden's conservation area regulations required formal approval of the proposed colour before any work began, adding a planning lead time to the project. The render itself had areas of blown stucco that needed repair without altering the facade's characteristic flat finish.

Our Approach

We took multiple paint samples from protected areas under the window sills and door canopy where fading was minimal, then worked with a specialist colour-matching service to formulate an exact match. Sample panels were painted on site and submitted to Camden's conservation team for approval. Once approved, we repaired all areas of blown render using a lime-based patching mortar, allowed repairs to cure fully, then applied a stabilising primer followed by two coats of breathable masonry paint in the approved shade. Sash windows were stripped and refinished in crisp white exterior eggshell, and the front door was given a complementary gloss treatment. Railings were wire-brushed, primed, and painted in traditional black.

The Result

The restored facade has recaptured the cheerful pastel character that makes Chalcot Square one of London's most photographed streets. The colour match is seamless, blending perfectly with the neighbouring properties. Camden's conservation officer signed off the completed work without reservation, and the property has since featured in a national magazine's article on London's prettiest streets.
