Whole-House Farrow & Ball Colour Scheme — Five-Floor Mayfair Townhouse

The Challenge

Developing a coherent whole-house colour scheme for a five-storey townhouse in which each room has an individual character, while ensuring that the transitions between rooms feel intentional rather than arbitrary, is among the most demanding colour consultation briefs we undertake. The client had strong instincts about individual colours but needed support to understand how each colour would behave in its specific room — Hague Blue in the ground-floor drawing room, for instance, receives limited daylight and required careful assessment of how the colour would read in evening artificial light. The staircase — the spine of the house through which all five floors connect — needed to flow seamlessly between the Hague Blue of the ground floor and the Cornforth White of the upper floors without an abrupt tonal break.

Our Approach

The pre-project colour consultation involved four site visits over six weeks. At each visit we painted large sample panels — minimum 400 x 600mm — in each candidate colour, positioned on the relevant walls and observed at different times of day and under both natural and artificial light. For the drawing room we prepared Hague Blue alongside two adjacent candidates to demonstrate its relationship with the room's joinery and the garden beyond. The staircase was resolved by taking Cornforth White at full strength on the upper floors and progressively deepening the tone on each lower landing using a custom Cornforth White-based mix, creating an almost imperceptible transition from the upper circulation into the deep Hague Blue of the ground floor. On site, all surfaces received thorough preparation including filling, sanding, and a full primer coat. Two coats of Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion were applied to all walls, and Estate Eggshell in Wimborne White to all joinery throughout the house. Ceiling colours were matched to the wall colour in each room using a diluted version of the wall emulsion to create harmony without copying.

The Result

The finished townhouse is the most articulate demonstration of whole-house Farrow & Ball colour planning we have completed. Each room has a distinct character — the drawing room is dramatic and intimate in Hague Blue, the dining room warm and sociable in Dead Salmon, the master bedroom restful and sophisticated in Mole's Breath — yet the house reads as a unified whole as one moves through it, thanks to the consistent Wimborne White woodwork and the carefully modulated staircase transition. The client described her first tour of the completed house as one of the most satisfying moments of ownership.
