Case Study

Edwardian Detached House — Full Exterior Repaint

A substantial Edwardian detached house sitting directly on the edge of Hampstead Heath required a complete exterior repaint, tackling a complex multi-pitch roofline, timber sash windows, and rendered masonry walls. The property falls within the Camden Conservation Area, requiring careful colour selection and use of breathable, heritage-compatible coatings throughout.

The Challenge

The roofline presented the primary access difficulty: four separate pitched sections, two projecting bay windows, and a pair of decorative timber gables demanded a bespoke scaffold design that took several days to erect safely. Conservation Area restrictions meant all proposed colours required pre-approval, and any product applied to the masonry had to be vapour-permeable to allow the original Edwardian render to breathe. Several sections of render had developed hairline cracks and required careful repair before any coating could be applied.

Our Approach

We engaged a specialist scaffold contractor early to design a system that gave full perimeter access without damaging the mature garden planting below. All masonry was thoroughly cleaned with a low-pressure soft-wash system, then repairs were carried out using a hydraulic lime-based render mortar to match the original. A Keim Granopor breathable silicate paint was selected following consultation with the Camden Conservation team. Timber sashes, fascias, and decorative gable details were hand-prepared, primed with Dulux Trade Weathershield Quick Dry Primer, and finished in two coats of Dulux Trade Weathershield gloss. The front door was finished in Farrow & Ball Exterior Eggshell in Railings.

The Result

The property emerged from the scaffold looking transformed: the pale Keim silicate finish glows against the Heath backdrop, and the contrasting dark joinery and front door give the facade a crisp, confident presence fully in keeping with the Conservation Area character. The client reported that several neighbours had already enquired about the contractor.

From the scaffold design through to the final brush stroke on the front door, the whole project was managed brilliantly. The house looks better now than it did when we bought it, and I know the breathable system they used will protect the fabric properly for years to come.
