Arts and Crafts Villa Whole-House Colour Scheme

A substantial detached Arts and Crafts villa near Battersea Park, situated within a conservation area, was given a whole-house colour scheme sympathetic to its early twentieth-century character. The property is notable for its extensive decorative woodwork throughout: panelled inglenook fireplace surrounds in the dining room and study, full-height wall panelling in the entrance hall, and elaborate built-in cabinetry in the kitchen and library. The brief was for an earth-toned palette that would honour the Arts and Crafts emphasis on natural materials, craftsmanship, and warmth.

The Challenge

The extensive decorative woodwork — much of it original solid oak — had been painted over in the 1980s with a thick coat of white gloss that obscured the grain and detailing beneath. Stripping this back without damaging the carved profiles of the inglenook surrounds required patience and specialist knowledge. The panelled hall, at nearly twelve metres in length and five metres in height, presented a significant logistical challenge for access and for achieving consistent colour across a very large continuous surface. The conservation area status required that all external work comply with local authority guidelines on colour and materials.

Our Approach

We stripped the painted woodwork using Eco Solutions Panel Wipe and careful heat-gun work on detailed carved sections, revealing the original oak grain across all principal joinery. Once stripped, the wood was assessed and treated with a penetrating wood hardener on any sections showing porosity, then primed with a compatible oil-based wood primer. A whole-house colour scheme was developed in consultation with the client, centred on a warm ochre in Farrow & Ball's Yellow Ground for the dining room, a deep Lichen for the library, and terracotta-influenced Templeton Pink for the master bedroom, with all woodwork unified throughout in Farrow & Ball Estate Eggshell in String. The panelled hall was prepared with particular care — all joins and panel edges crisped up, nail holes filled, and the surface primed before receiving two full coats of Farrow & Ball Hardwick White to create a calm transition between the richly coloured rooms.

The Result

The villa now reads as a coherent whole, with the earth-toned palette working harmoniously with the natural oak of the exposed and stripped woodwork, the original terracotta floor tiles, and the garden views from each room. The inglenook fireplace surrounds — their carved detailing now clearly legible after stripping — have become the focal points the Arts and Crafts architect intended. The conservation area officer noted the project as an exemplar of sensitive interior restoration during a neighbourhood advisory visit.

We bought the house for its character, but the white gloss was burying all of it. Watching the oak grain come back during the stripping process was wonderful. The colour scheme has given the house the warmth and depth we always knew it could have.
