Health & Safety

Safe Working, Every Site, Every Time

Professional painting and decorating demands professional standards of health and safety. Our comprehensive policies protect our team, your family, and your property.

Our Approach to Health and Safety

Health and safety is not a box-ticking exercise at Belgravia Painters — it is embedded in how we plan, manage, and deliver every project. Our clients often have families at home during decorating work, and many of the properties we work in are high-value residences where damage or disruption must be minimised. Both of these realities demand a rigorous, thoughtful approach to safety.

As part of the Hampstead Renovations Group, we benefit from established health and safety systems that have been refined across thousands of projects. Our policies meet or exceed all current UK legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, and all relevant COSHH and working at height regulations.

Key facts about our health and safety standards and certifications.

CSCS Certification

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is the industry standard for verifying that workers have the right training and qualifications. Every Mayfair Painters decorator holds a valid CSCS card appropriate to their role.

To obtain a CSCS card, each decorator must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test and hold a recognised qualification in painting and decorating. Cards are renewed regularly, ensuring that competence is maintained over time.

Risk Assessments

Every project begins with a thorough risk assessment conducted by our project manager before any work commences. We identify potential hazards — from unstable surfaces and overhead obstructions to electrical installations and asbestos risks in older properties. Each assessment is documented, shared with the decorating team, and reviewed if the scope of work changes. For larger or more complex projects, we produce method statements detailing exactly how high-risk tasks will be carried out safely.

COSHH Compliance

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations govern how we handle, store, and dispose of paints, solvents, strippers, and other chemical products. We maintain up-to-date safety data sheets for every product we use and ensure our team understands the specific risks associated with each substance. In practice, this means proper ventilation during application, appropriate PPE when handling solvents, and secure storage of materials on site. We increasingly specify low-VOC and natural paint products, which reduces chemical exposure for both our team and your household.

Dust Extraction & Containment

Surface preparation — sanding, stripping, and filling — generates dust that can be both a nuisance and a health hazard, particularly in properties that may contain lead-based paints. We use professional dust extraction systems connected to our sanding equipment, significantly reducing airborne particles. Work areas are sealed with protective sheeting to prevent dust migration into living spaces. In occupied properties, we take additional measures to protect furnishings, flooring, and ventilation systems from contamination.

Working at Height

Falls from height remain the single biggest cause of serious injury in the construction industry. We take this risk extremely seriously. All work at height is planned in advance, with the appropriate access equipment specified for each task. We use professional scaffold towers, podium steps, and extending ladders that meet current EN standards. Our decorators are trained in the safe erection and use of all access equipment. For exterior work requiring scaffolding, we use licensed scaffolding contractors and ensure all installations are inspected before use.

Personal Protective Equipment

We provide all necessary PPE to our decorators and ensure it is used consistently. This includes dust masks and respirators rated for the specific products being used, safety goggles for overhead work and chemical handling, protective gloves appropriate to the task, and appropriate footwear for site conditions. PPE is not optional — it is a condition of employment, and our project managers enforce its use on every site visit.

Waste Disposal

We dispose of all waste responsibly and in accordance with current environmental regulations. Paint tins, solvents, and chemical waste are never poured down drains or disposed of in general waste. We use licensed waste carriers and maintain documentation of all waste transfers. Empty paint tins are cleaned and recycled where possible. Dust sheets and protective materials are reused across multiple projects to minimise waste. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations without compromising on quality or safety.

Insurance Cover

We carry comprehensive insurance cover on every project. Our public liability insurance provides cover of £5 million, protecting your property and possessions against accidental damage. Our employer's liability insurance provides cover of £10 million, well above the legal minimum, protecting our team in the unlikely event of workplace injury.

Copies of our current insurance certificates are available on request and can be provided before any work commences. We are happy to share these with property managers, managing agents, or building management companies who require proof of insurance as a condition of access.

Our Commitment

Health and safety is everyone's responsibility, and we take ours seriously. If you have any questions about our safety policies, risk assessments, or certifications, please do not hesitate to ask. We are always happy to discuss how we keep your project safe.
