Spray Painting Kitchen Cabinets in London: A Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about spray painting kitchen cabinets in London: on-site versus off-site spraying, preparation, product choices, realistic costs, and how to find a qualified sprayer.

Spray Painting Kitchen Cabinets in London

Spray painting kitchen cabinets has become one of the most popular kitchen renovation options in London. For a fraction of the cost of a full replacement kitchen, a professional spray finish can transform tired, dated cabinetry into something that looks factory-fresh. This guide explains how the process works, what to expect, and what questions to ask before you book.

On-Site Spraying Versus Off-Site Spraying

There are two approaches to cabinet spraying, and the right one depends on your kitchen's configuration and your budget.

On-site spraying means the sprayer comes to your property, masks everything that should not be painted -- worktops, appliances, floors, walls -- and sprays the cabinets in position. The advantages are speed and convenience: the kitchen is out of use for one to two days rather than the week or more that an off-site job requires. The disadvantages are that on-site masking must be extremely thorough because airborne overspray in a London kitchen can travel further than people expect, and the finish quality, while very good, is marginally below what a controlled workshop environment produces.

Off-site spraying (also called spray-in-place or workshop spraying) involves removing the cabinet doors and drawer fronts, taking them to a spray booth, and returning them once the paint has fully cured. The carcasses are painted on-site in the meantime. The resulting finish is the equal of a factory spray because the booth environment is dust-free and temperature-controlled. This is the preferred method for high-end kitchens where the investment in the original cabinetry warrants it.

For most London properties, on-site spraying produces an excellent result that transforms the room and holds up well to daily use, provided a quality product is applied correctly.

Surface Preparation: The Most Important Step

Regardless of method, preparation determines the final result more than any other factor. Poor preparation is the single most common reason for spray cabinet jobs failing -- peeling or chipping within months of completion.

The preparation sequence for solid timber or MDF cabinet doors is:

  1. Degrease thoroughly with a tack-rag or specialist degreaser. Kitchen surfaces accumulate cooking oils that are invisible to the eye but will prevent adhesion.
  2. Sand with 180-grit to key the existing finish. If the original factory lacquer or paint is unstable, it needs to be stripped.
  3. Fill any dents, chips, or grain telegraphing in MDF edges with a fine cellulose filler and re-sand.
  4. Apply a bonding primer or adhesion promoter appropriate to the substrate -- a different product is required for bare MDF, factory-lacquered surfaces, solid timber, and thermofoil-wrapped doors.
  5. Denib the primed surface with 320-grit before topcoats.

Thermofoil (vinyl-wrapped) cabinet doors require special attention. The vinyl must be adhered firmly at all edges before painting, as the heat from the spray gun can lift loose areas. In some cases, thermofoil wrapping is too unstable to paint, and replacement doors are a better option.

Product Choices

The two most widely used products for cabinet spraying in London are:

Two-component (2K) polyurethane lacquers provide an extremely hard, durable finish that resists heat, moisture, and domestic cleaning products. They are mixed with a hardener immediately before application and have a pot life of a few hours. Once cured, they are very difficult to damage. The downside is that they contain isocyanates, which require full respiratory protection and a filtered mask during application. In a London kitchen, proper ventilation during and after application is essential.

Water-based acrylic lacquers have improved enormously in the last five years. Products from brands such as Teknos, Milesi, and Morrells produce a finish that is hard, cleanable, and durable, with none of the health risks associated with 2K. They are the more common choice for on-site work where full respiratory protection is harder to implement.

Avoid cheap water-based emulsions applied by brush or roller on kitchen cabinets. They chip easily, do not clean well, and look poor after six months.

Realistic Costs in London

Cabinet spraying in London typically costs between £800 and £2,500 for an average kitchen, depending on the number of doors and drawer fronts, the condition of the existing finish, and whether off-site or on-site spraying is chosen. A small galley kitchen with twelve doors might sit at the lower end; a large open-plan kitchen with thirty or more doors and complex island cabinetry will sit at the upper end.

The cost of cabinet spraying should be weighed against replacement. A new mid-range kitchen in London costs £8,000 to £25,000 or more including installation. If the carcasses are sound and the layout works, spraying the doors and fronts is often the most cost-effective way to achieve a transformative result.

What to Look for in a Cabinet Spray Painter

Ask any spray painter you are considering the following:

  • What product do they use, and why?
  • Do they strip and reprime, or simply scuff and topcoat?
  • Do they carry public liability insurance to at least two million pounds?
  • Can they provide photographs and references from previous London cabinet jobs?

A professional who can answer these questions clearly and specifically is likely to produce a finish you will still be happy with three years later. One who cannot is unlikely to.
