Decorating Stanhope Gardens

Stanhope Gardens is an elegant Victorian residential street in South Kensington, lying between Gloucester Road and Sumner Place and lined with handsome stucco-fronted terrace houses of four to five storeys developed in the 1870s by Charles James Freake, the speculative builder responsible for much of this part of South Kensington. The street has a quiet, leafy character despite its central location, and many of its properties have been sensitively converted into spacious lateral apartments while retaining original Victorian cornices, stucco facades, and ironwork. It sits firmly within the Onslow Square Conservation Area.

The Freake-era stucco facades on Stanhope Gardens are typically painted in the traditional South Kensington palette of warm cream or off-white, and require breathable mineral or silicate exterior coatings to preserve the original lime-render substrate; the tall, well-proportioned interior rooms with their original plasterwork cornices and ceiling roses present ideal conditions for high-quality emulsion and traditional oil eggshell finishes in refined period colour schemes.
