Decorating Redcliffe Gardens

Redcliffe Gardens is one of the longest and most gracious garden square streets in South Kensington, running north-south between Fulham Road and Redcliffe Square in a Victorian residential district developed from the 1860s onwards. The street is flanked by substantial four and five-storey Victorian stucco and brick terraced properties, many of which are arranged around communal garden squares with mature plane trees and original ironwork enclosures. It forms part of the Earl's Court and West Brompton Conservation Area and represents some of the finest large-scale Victorian residential architecture in the Royal Borough.

The large stucco-fronted Victorian terraces on Redcliffe Gardens present recurring maintenance challenges with render delamination, carbonation of lime-based substrates, and the repainting of extensive areas of original ironwork around the communal garden squares. Decorators must be experienced with vapour-permeable silicate or mineral paint systems suited to historic render, and must work within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea's conservation area colour guidelines.
