Decorating Colville Square

Colville Square is a Victorian garden square in Notting Hill, developed in the 1860s as part of the wider Ladbroke and Pembridge estates that transformed this part of North Kensington. The square is surrounded by three- and four-storey stucco-fronted terraced houses typical of the mid-Victorian speculative development of the area, with a central communal garden. It forms part of the Pembridge Conservation Area and has seen considerable gentrification since the 1980s, with many properties now comprehensively restored.

The stucco facades surrounding Colville Square are a significant maintenance commitment — the large painted surfaces require repainting on a cycle of roughly seven to ten years, and all hairline cracks should be filled with a flexible filler before new coats are applied. The communal garden railings and individual property ironwork are also typically repainted on the same schedule to maintain the visual coherence of the square.
