Decorating Danemere Street

Danemere Street is a residential street in the Putney Bridge area of Fulham, SW15, comprising a continuous run of late-Victorian and Edwardian two-storey terraced houses built predominantly in red brick with yellow stock-brick detailing around the window openings and decorative gabled bay windows to the principal elevations. The street was developed in the 1890s and early 1900s as part of the speculative expansion of Fulham toward the Thames, reflecting the period's preference for picturesque street frontages with individual bay-windowed houses set behind small front gardens. Although not in a formal conservation area, the intact character of the street is recognised by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham as an area of architectural interest.

The red-brick and render bay frontages of Danemere Street frequently incorporate decorative tile paths, original timber sash windows, and painted stucco string courses that together create a decorating brief requiring careful colour co-ordination across both masonry and joinery elements. Front doors are a key feature of these Edwardian terraces and traditionally benefit from a high-gloss or satin finish in colours sympathetic to the warm brick tones, while rendered bay window surrounds are best treated with a masonry paint that allows the substrate to breathe.
