Decorating Howland Street

Howland Street is a characterful Fitzrovia street of Georgian and Victorian terraced houses running east–west between Tottenham Court Road and Cleveland Street, within sight of the BT Tower. The street developed in stages through the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, producing a pleasant mix of stock-brick Georgian houses and later yellow- and red-brick Victorian additions of two to four storeys. It retains a predominantly residential character with some ground-floor commercial uses, popular with media, tech, and creative professionals drawn to central Fitzrovia.

The varied building stock on Howland Street calls for individual paint specifications: Georgian stock-brick elevations benefit from breathable silicate masonry paints, while later Victorian surfaces may carry multiple historic paint layers that require careful investigation before recoating. Internally, conversions often feature a mix of original Georgian cornices in upper floors alongside stripped-back brick and steel in ground-floor commercial spaces.
