Decorating Elm Park Gardens

Elm Park Gardens is a handsome mid-Victorian residential street in Chelsea running between Fulham Road and Old Church Street, developed in the 1870s as a broad, tree-lined avenue of substantial red-brick and terracotta Queen Anne Revival terraces that contrast sharply with the stucco tradition of Belgravia to the east. The street's scale and architectural ambition reflect its position on the boundary of the Cadogan Estate, and many of its four- and five-storey houses have been sensitively divided into generous lateral apartments while retaining their elaborate exterior decoration. It sits within the Chelsea Conservation Area and is regarded as one of the area's finest examples of the Queen Anne Revival style championed by architects such as George Godwin and J. J. Stevenson.

The elaborate red-brick and terracotta facades of Elm Park Gardens are best left unpainted, with maintenance focused on careful lime mortar repointing and cleaning of the moulded terracotta panels, while the painted render dressings, timber sash windows, and ornate front doors receive the principal exterior decorating attention. Interior projects in the large-floor-plate apartments frequently involve restoring decorative plasterwork, original panel mouldings, and the generous sash windows characteristic of the Queen Anne Revival period.
