Decorating Inverness Terrace

Inverness Terrace is a substantial Victorian stucco-fronted street running south from Bayswater Road through the heart of Bayswater, lined with imposing four- and five-storey Italianate terraces built in the 1850s and 1860s as part of the rapid residential development of the area following the arrival of the railway. The broad street is characterised by its full-height rendered and stucco facades, ornamental cornices, and generous stucco portico entrances, many of which have been converted into hotels, apartments, and embassy buildings while retaining the grandeur of the original Victorian street composition.

The large stucco facades of Inverness Terrace present significant exterior decorating projects; the scale of these five-storey buildings requires scaffolding and experienced teams capable of working to a consistent standard across substantial elevations, and the calcite-rich stucco substrate benefits from vapour-permeable mineral paint systems that prevent moisture trapping beneath the surface.
